Neighborhood Preschool Philosopy and Goals

I believe that early childhood should be a time of fun, warmth, security, exploring, and discovery. Preschool children are creative and receptive; the program strives to nurture and encourage these qualities in its students.   I believe in the importance of playful learning. I believe in knowing the age group and their developmental attributes. I believe in kindness, consistency, and patience in teaching preschoolers.

Because Neighborhood Preschool is in a dedicated space in my home, rather than in a larger daycare center or school location, we have many benefits. Our classes are limited to 8 children, so the noise and distractions of a larger center are reduced. This low student-teacher ratio provides for more one-on-one time with the children, and allows me to really know and work with each individual. Our classroom, an inviting and stimulating environment, offers the children a mixture of home and school, making it a gentle transition and a gradual introduction to what school is like.

Some of my key program goals include:

  • We have lots of variety.  While we follow the same structure each day, we also change our learning centers and activities on a regular basis.  We store toys that are lesser used, and bring out something new to inspire.
  • Physical development and health is important. We have outside play time every day (even in light rain), with outside play never sacrificed for more teaching time.  If it is too wet to go out, we have physical activities indoors instead, pushing the tables back and having fun.
  • The children have large chunks of time to really get involved in their play.  I facilitate learning by adding props, inspiring larger ideas, and I use these teachable moments to integrate their playing with concepts in math, language, and their world.  We don't rush from one thing to another.  We practice focusing and attention to details.
  • Yes, there is a story time.  But reading and telling stories happens all the time!  We read about everything we are interested in, and books and language are included in every learning center.  Knock-knock jokes are a current favorite snacktime activity.
  • Ready for Kindergarten.  My goal is to help each child gain the skills they need to start off their school career.  They should be ready to take care of their personal needs, have some "getting along" skills, and be familiar with the basics of reading, writing and math.  And they should know that school is a fun and safe place to go.
